Rambley Bits 2-5-11

Late again, though I think I’ll just plan on doing this on Saturday from now on.  I’m not sure how much I like this random thought format, but I do not have time to write about everything I want to and this allows me to write about things that I would normally not have time for.

  • Super Bowl time!  Oddly enough, I’m less excited this year than I have been in quite a long time, despite being a general fan of both teams playing.  Last year my team, the Colts, was playing so I am understandably less excited than then, but I should feel more up for this game than I am.  I don’t see either the Packers or the Steelers failing to show up so it should be a good game.  Maybe I’m not feeling it because the labor trouble I keep hearing about.
  • Seriously NFL Owners, fuck you!  I’m not 100% with the players, but I’m there about 85%.  Pro football is already harder on player’s bodies than any other sport, why do they need two more games?  If they make that change then the players should get a larger percentage of the revenue, because they will most likely play fewer seasons due to injury.
  • Packers over Steelers 24-20.  The Packers seem hungrier and playing slightly better.  That being said, it is still a toss up.  I think the Packers are a little less likely to make the big mistake and Rodgers is playing as good as any QB.  I am getting more excited just thinking about the game.
  • I kind of hate Super Bowl commercials.  While some are amusing, they reek of the worst excesses of American culture and seem to be a monumental waste of the companies making them’s money.
  • I finished Harry Turtledove’s Opening Atlantis.  I like the premise of Atlantis actually existing, but instead of doing something interesting with the premise, the author merely grafted U.S. history onto this new history.  I did not hate it or anything, and I’ll probably pick up the other books in the series eventually, but I was disappointed.
  • I finally beat Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.  I really liked it.  It did, however, take me more than 2 years to beat it.  I loaned it to a friend and ignored it for a while.  Despite liking the game, I felt no compulsion to return to the game after I had put it down.  So like, not love for this game.  I do need to track down the sequels.
  • In what should be no surprise, Mega Man 9 is possibly my favorite game of this console generation.  So hearing that Capcom was making a Mega Man 10 excited me.  It appears that lightning did not strike twice, though, because Mega Man 10 is a good step below Mega Man 9 in quality.  One big reason: Commando Man.  His level has more bullshit than any other Mega Man level.  Fuck that guy and his stage.
  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles:  The Crystal Bearers is a mess of a game, but I’ll be damned if I don’t love it anyway.  Imagine a shooter that you could beat with out actually shooting anybody; you could just run by everybody and reach the end.  That is basically what the Crystal Bearers is, but somehow it is still tons of fun.
  • Seasons 7-9 of South Park are probably the best of the series, but Season 10 has quite the dip in quality.  Not a Family Guy bottom-falling-out drop (I’m not going to give this up, Family Guy sucks now) but the average episode is not quite as good as they were though there are still some stand outs.  Judging by the number of episodes featuring new tricks with the animation, I think the creator are chafing a bit with the shows simple style.
  • Inception is a damn good movie.  It shouldn’t be a surprise, Christopher Nolan is a damn good movie maker and the members of the cast are fantastic actors.  I think this needs its own review.
  • Next week look for the return of Futurama reviews, Duck Tales, a Zelda review and maybe one for Inception.
